New Medicines Service

Do you have a long-term condition? You’re in the right place. The New Medicine Service (NMS) is designed to help people with long-term conditions and newly prescribed medicines – it’s a free service, funded by the NHS, and provided by your pharmacist to help you to get the most out of your new medicine. We know that taking your medicine can be hard – but we’re here to make it easier.

NMS provides support from trained professionals who will work with you one on one to help you get started on your new treatment plan, answer any questions or concerns about side effects, and provide advice on how best to manage your condition.

How will the New Medicines Service help?

The aim of this service is to improve patient adherence to treatment and subsequently reduce medicine wastage. Also, to reduce hospital admissions from adverse drug reaction by identifying them in the early stages of the treatment. During your consultations with the pharmacist, you will also be advised on lifestyle intervention that will help with the management of your conditions.

When you are started on a new medicine for Asthma, Lung conditions such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema, Type 2 diabetes, High blood pressure, or any conditions where you take a medicine to control the way your blood clots, you might be eligible for the NMS service. Our pharmacist will have a chat to you about everything you need to know before taking your new medication. (Due to covid restriction we are allowed to do this service over the phone.)

During your follow-up consultation, the pharmacists will ask you about how you got on with your medication, explore any issues you might have encountered and provided relevant advice and support. The pharmacist will arrange a final meeting in 1-2 weeks time to ensure that you have a good understanding of your new treatment and that you aren’t having any adverse effects.
